My new article (with Ralph Chapman) examines factors driving climate policy under Jacinda Ardern's sixth Labour govt. We find that industry resistance was central to the govt's disappointing policy outputs, although coalition dynamics, public opinion and the govt's refusal to tackle resistance head on all played a part.

Maybe you've heard that the Minister of Science, Innovation and Technology #NZpol has seen fit to de-fund social science and humanities from the #MarsdenFund - well here's the Prez of the Royal Society Te Apārangi #RSTA responding.
The #RSTA is necessarily pretty conservative so for their Prez Prof Jane Harding to go this hard speaks to just how bad the decision is.
Plus we are talking about a pittance in govt terms.
Staggering that the NZ govt has announced the end of funding for social science and humanities research from our main academic fund (Marsden). Science projects now also need to show economic benefits.
This change has happened seemingly without consultation or even signalling that it's coming. Many hours will now be wasted with researchers revising or throwing away the proposals they've been working on. Apart from anything, this is terrible governance.

The playbook being used to transfer NZ health system to offshore companies for profits and for taxpayers to provide financial support to them.
Based on NZ and US elections, I question somethings I believed could be true are false.
1) Most people are not "good or decent". They are very selfish, self centered, greedy, bigoted, racist, sexist, LGBTQ+ phobic etc and are happy to unite themselves as one even if they don't belive in all the bad just to get what they want making "good" people a minority.
2) With above being true, pretending left policies somehow attract them is just a fantasy when selfishness & greed is Key.
When Luxon graced Dunedin with his presence after the floods, he was completely unaware that the DCC had requested government support to buy at-risk properties in South Dunedin.
In parliament yesterday, Chris Hipkins asked the PM, "... was he not properly briefed before his visit or does he just not care?"
Luxon claimed it was Labour who declined the funding *in May 2024*.
May 2024.

Just published an article in @theconversationau on New Zealanders' support for cycleways using data from the NZ election study.
NZers are not "sick and tired" of spending money on bike lanes as the Transport Minister said last week. But NZers are divided, with roughly equal support in favour and opposed to cycleways.
Bike lanes have become a culture war issue, and the current govt seems to prefer fanning the fires rather than finding middle ground.
It was great to discuss intellectual property and the sustainable development goals on a panel with Professors Jessica Lai, Susy Frankel and Christian Schott at the Victoria University of Wellington. It was a good opportunity to explore the many fine contributions contained in the collection, The Elgar Companion to Intellectual Property and the Sustainable Development Goals, which I edited along with Bita Amani and Caroline B Ncube for Edward Elgar Publishing. https://lnkd.in/g--Zpqz4 It was also a useful platform to consider New Zealand's progress towards the realisation of the sustainable development goals. #SDGs #IP #copyright #trademark #patent #sustainability #nzlaw #nzpol
